Based on the NHL rankings at the time of recording, I chose to play as Quebec against Detroit. The Avalanche were leading the Central Division in the West (as well as leading the league) and the Red Wings were leading the Atlantic in the East. [Edit 2026-01-31 - In the real NHL Colorado beat Detroit 5-0 tonight so they were even better than the '96 Nords.] Both teams played tighten-up, pockety-pick and break-a-da-flow all through the 1st period. Not much advantage to be had and the period ended scoreless with the shots at QUE 12 and DET 11. Clark broke the seal about 5 minutes into the 2nd period when he beat Vernon top-blocker-side on a shot from his wing off a pass from Krupp. The Nordiques were able to apply better pressure than the Red Wings and Sakic scored with a beauty low shot on the powerplay a bit later on as well. Shots at the 2nd intermission were QUE 35 and DET 18. The Nordiques kept up the pressure and stretched that lead to the coveted 3-goal lead of 3-0 when Kovalenko played keep-away until Clark could sneak in from the side and take the pass for a hard, blind backhander that went in low and tight to the post about 3 minutes into the final period. Kovalenko rounded off the scoring a little later on when he went top-blocker-side benefitting from some great work by Lefebvre in the Red Wing's end. Vernon was hindered by his own defense and he left for the bench to be replaced by Chris Osgood. The Nordiques held Detroit at bay until the end and won 4-0. Thibault stopped all 23 shots by the Wings for his shut-out. Enjoy!
