Kalama, Chemi Chemi & Ololoo's new life at Ithumba | Sheldrick Trust

In the very early hours of 6th August 2011 three young orphaned African elephants stepped into a specially designed vehicle, that would take them to Tsavo National Park and the next stage in their journey back to the wild.

Chemi Chemi, Kalama and Ololoo are orphan elephants, given a second chance at life through the efforts of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Beginning at the DSWT's Nursery in Nairobi, these elephants have been afforded everything they need to develop and grow as elephants, both physically and emotionally.

As their tusks begin to show and they start to show greater wild elephant behaviour it is time to move them to Tsavo National Park, where the DSWT operates two reintegration centres. From here they will return to the wild, where they belong.

This short film shows the journey to Ithumba for these three graduates of the nursery and the amazing greeting that awaited them at Ithumba, from wild elephants and ex-orphans.

The work of the DSWT is entirely dependent on donations and were it not for the support of a caring public we would not be able to rescue these orphans, or care for them, or help them back to the wild.
