The parathyroid glands, located near the thyroid, release PTH, a hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorus levels in the body. When kidney function declines, these minerals get out of balance, and the parathyroid gland produces extra PTH. This condition is known as Secondary Hyperparathyroidism, which is commonly seen in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

For healthy people, sunlight helps the body produce Vitamin D, which the kidneys then activate. But in kidney patients, this activation step doesn’t happen well. Doctors often prescribe active forms of Vitamin D, like Calcitriol or calcium binders like Calcium Acetate, which are already ready for the body to use.
