Video shows our visit to Leicester on 10th February 2025 where we visited the Richard III visitor centre and Leicester Cathedral. The visitor centre is on the site of Greyfriars and includes the car park location where in 2012 a team of historians and archaeologists discovered a battle-scarred skeleton in a hastily dug grave . DNA experts from the University of Leicester, the birthplace of genetic fingerprinting, proved beyond all reasonable doubt that this was the last Plantagenet King of England.
Richard III was born in the midst of 'Wars of the Roses’ in the House of York, and became King on 26 June 1483 . However after a turbulent period he died in 1485 in battle against The Lancastrian claimant to the throne Henry Tudor.
He was the last king of the Plantagenet dynasty and his defeat and death marked the end of the Middle Ages in England, the beginning of the Tudor period.
King Richard III's remains were reinterred in Leicester Cathedral on March 26, 2015.
The visitor centre is a family-friendly attraction offering something for everyone, from interactive displays to expert guided tours. In addition you can experience the thrill of standing where one of history's greatest mysteries unfolded.
We also visit the Cathedral located next to the centre where Richard III has been reinterred. In the Cathedral we see the tomb
crowned with a single piece of Swaledale Fossil Brown from a quarry in North Yorkshire; a quarry which he would have once owned as the Duke of York, 530 years ago.
Also in the cathedral is the Pall created for his reinterment. One side of the pall represents the past and has people of the time of Richard III. The other side has figures of the present, showing some of people who have been significant in the recent story of the King. There are also six seraphim, the highest order of angels. Two at the head and foot of the coffin carry shields; one with the symbol of St Martin for the Cathedral and one with the cinquefoil rose of Leicester.
