The century-old dispute over the Subramaniya Swamy Temple and the Sikkander Badusha Dargah at Thiruparankundram flared up again during this year’s Karthigai Deepam festival in Madurai. The Madurai Bench of the High Court had ordered that the Deepam be lit not only at the traditional spot near the Uchchi Pillayar Temple but also at the hilltop Deepa Thoon pillar. But the beacon pillar remained unlit, triggering protests by Hindu Munnani and other groups, who accused the authorities of defying the order.
