This is Kenny Drew Jr, Richard Drexler and Tom Carabasi playing one of Kenny's originals "A Silent War."

Somehow - near the turn of the last millennium - I met Richard Drexler. The way it happened was kind of unclear but I had just built a studio with my brother and cousins and Grandpa, and I was a jazz freak, showing up at clubs all the time. Richard was playing the piano when I met him and I latched on to him one night and got him over to the studio. We had built it specifically with a great “room sound” in which I could record music with acoustic instruments. Rick Powell had placed his very nice Kawai 6’ Grand Piano in there and I was determined to keep it in prime condition and in prime tune at all times.
Richard asked if he could bring Kenny Drew, Jr. and Tom Carabasi in to record some stuff as they had been playing together at Fandango for a while and had that synchronicity that comes from good musicians working together on a regular basis. That weird, unspoken nod that somehow says “I’m going to change keys and slow it down a little on this passage”, and all three get it and make it perfect.
So they came in and recorded this in a day. No punches or anything. All “live” in one take just to get a record of what they were doing at the time.
I was floored at this trio’s talent. Kenny in particular was a singular talent in the world of jazz.
