Описание к видео Beginners Guide To Changing Oil-Helping Mechanically Declined To Do More

A beginners Guide to #changingoil. Helping the mechanically declined.

Changing the oil on your car is a very basic part of maintenance. There are many reasons to get under your car to change the oil, all of them relate to either maintenance of the vehicle or safety, or both. This is where you can begin to know how your car works and what's under there.

One of the first things to do before your first oil change on a car is to read the owners manual, it will have a section on specifications or service and appearance care or something similar. This section will have information on type of oil, the viscosity grade, how often to change the oil, where to add the oil, how much oil should be used, and many other useful bits of information. If this seems like a lot to take in, don't worry, just make notes and ask questions, you will find that many people are willing to help you to learn, this can be on forums for the car you have, on YouTube or other helpful web sites or even the mechanic down the street.

Some of this information will be in the owners manual, other sources for this are forums, YouTube videos, friends who are willing to mentor you in doing this, or taking the car to a mechanic or oil change location to have them do the change this time and explain what's needed, though paying for this information is not the best way, it can give you what you need.

Next make sure you have the all tools that are needed. This will be more than just the tools to open the drain plug, and remove the filter. Sometimes there are additional panels or parts that have to be removed to get to the filter, or drain plug, these may require additional tools to remove and replace. Gloves, safety glasses, paper towels and more are needed to work safely and control the mess. If you don't make a mess the first time changing the oil you will some other time.

Finally you'll have a need for something to catch the oil in, and something to clean up spilled oil. A drain pan made for the purpose is a good option, but not the only one, turkey trays, buckets, and more can be used to catch the old oil as it is being drained. A cheap plastic tarp laid out under the car will catch most spills and help keep the mess down. The cheapest clay cat litter is perfect to soak up spills that happen.

Now that you have everything needed, this is the process in general.
Drive the car around for 10 to 30 minutes to warm up the motor.
If you are going to use one, spread out the plastic tarp on firm level ground.
If needed, put your ramps in place on the tarp and drive the car up on them.
If you are using a jack, you must use stable jack stands to safely be under the car. Never just use a jack to hold up a car that you are under. Even the best floor jack can fail and you may die with a car on you.
Next remove the filter with the appropriate tool. With most spin on filters I find that plumbing tools are best for this, either a strap wrench or large slip joint pliers. Most of the oil filter removal tools I have used are designed for specific engine vehicle combinations and don't work on all. Slip joint pliers will remove most spin on filters and a strap wrench will remove most of the ones the pliers won't. Then there are the ones that do need a special tool, make sure that you have the tool that will work before starting.
With the drain pan under the drain plug, remove the drain plug with the correct wrench. The oil that comes out will be warm to hot so be careful, this is where multiple layers of gloves can be useful. The oil will not just drain straight down unless that is the direction of the drain, it will pour out in a stream in the direction of the drain. Remember this when positioning the drain pan, or it will get very messy.
Keep track of the drain plug and any washers or O rings that are on it. Some engines need a new washer or O ring on the plug every time it is removed, others will last as long as the motor, your manual may tell you this if it is needed. If you see minor leaks from the drain plug replacing the washer will sometimes correct this.
