A poor traveling puppeteer gives a performance at a roadside inn . Satisfied spectators applaud, and the innkeeper orders his daughter to feed the artist to the full. The puppeteer and the innkeeper's daughter are in love and plan to run away at dawn. At night, when there is not a single visitor left in the inn, the puppeteer is left alone, and his dolls come to life. They are upset about the upcoming separation and ask their owner not to leave them. But the puppeteer explains that a family man needs a more serious craft. There is a lot of time until morning, and the puppeteer asks the puppets to play him “a longer fairy tale.”

Бедный странствующий кукольник даёт представление в придорожном трактире. Довольные зрители аплодируют, а трактирщик велит своей дочери досыта накормить артиста. Кукольник и дочь трактирщика влюблены друг в друга и собираются бежать на рассвете. Ночью, когда в трактире не остаётся ни одного посетителя, кукольник остаётся один, и его куклы оживают. Они расстроены предстоящей разлукой и просят своего владельца не оставлять их. Но кукольник объясняет, что семейному человеку нужно более серьёзное ремесло. До утра много времени, и кукольник просит кукол сыграть ему «сказку подлиннее».
