Letterpress printing a double sided woodcut for National Recycling Day (November 15)

When it comes to letterpress printing, everything that one prints has to be .918 of an inch, also known as Type High. Because finding wood that fits that height requirement, sometimes woodcuts were recycled and a new engraving was made on the other side. We have some double sided woodcuts in our shop and we are highlighting one today because November 15th is National Recycling Day.

For today, Howard letterpress printed both sides of a recycled woodcut that was gifted to us about a year ago from one of our followers, Jim, from Arizona. The first side is a hand carved number 5 and the other side is a fancy Z. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.
