Studio 23 was a now-defunct UHF TV channel that is owned by ABS-CBN Corporation. It was conceived by the network in the early 1990’s, as a more “upscale” alternative to the main ABS-CBN Channel 2. However, local regulations forbid TV networks from operating more than one channel, and as a workaround, ABS-CBN formed the subsidiary AMCARA Broadcasting Network, as the owner and operator of Studio 23. The channel was officially launched on 12 October 1996, with an offering of popular American TV shows such as "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show"; the first program aired on launch night was the 1992 romantic thriller film "The Bodyguard". It was also once the Philippine home of MTV until 2000, when the latter moved to its own terrestrial channel. Afterwards, Myx - ABS-CBN's own music channel - then took MTV's initial place as a blocktimer on Studio 23.
As it became increasingly difficult to market an upscale channel to a mass audience, Studio 23 began to shift its focus to the youth demographic in the mid-2000’s, and this was made evident by its term of endearment to its loyal viewers: "Kabarkada". The rebranding of Studio 23 as the "Kabarkada" network included a new Station ID, a new logo and a new slogan, and it provided the channel the opportunity to tie up all these changes into one comprehensive package, which designed to welcome new viewers while recognizing the role of long-time Studio 23 viewers in its unprecedented success.
Despite the channel's relaunch, its programming was still dominated by US TV shows, and in fact became known for bringing the latest seasons of the reality shows "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race" to local audiences. But however, the channel also started airing original programming, ranging from news to comedy and music, and it includes spinoffs and supplemental programming for shows aired on the main ABS-CBN network, particularly "Pinoy Dream Academy" and "Pinoy Big Brother".
The channel officially ceased commercial operations on 16 January 2014 after been 17 years on the airwaves, and it was reformatted into an all-sports free-TV channel named ABS-CBN Sports and Action - or S+A (pronounced 'S-and-A'), which was launched just two days later on 18 January 2014.
