You can see the typical water level at Caesar Creek Lake from the rust on pillars near the boat landings but a lack of rain has the lake well under where it normally is this time of year. With Memorial Day just a few days away that could mean trouble for anyone looking to have fun on the water. "Without mother nature helping us out, it isn't going up more than a couple inches a day," said Russell Curtis a park ranger at Caesar Creek State Park. It's nearly 10 feet below its normal level. "Nine feet is the difference between diving into the water and coming right back up and diving into the water and maybe hitting your head on the ground," said Russell Curtis a park ranger at Caesar Creek State Park. The low water level is not keeping people out though. We stopped by on a Tuesday afternoon and found several people on jet skis and boats. "Backing in there's a lot of debris and a lot of mud makes it pretty soft and then there are low spots in the water as far as rocks," said Josh Gillen. The water level was dropped by the Army Corp of Engineers for the construction of a marina set to open next year. Officials started refilling the lake a month ago. "They (the Army Corps of Engineers) know what they're doing. We just need a good heavy rain to fill it back up and it takes time. They didn't drop it overnight and it's not going to fill up overnight," said John Hawkins. "Nine feet is a significant drop. You have entire swimming coves now that are just, no water in them at all. Our beach didn't have water for a while, it retracted all the way out to the beach so you have to be careful where you're swimming and fishing at," said Curtis. So you have to pay attention where you go on your boat and where you're swimming. "It's a big risk being out here with all the rocks and just the low water level itself," said Gillen. "You need to be really aware of what's under your boat using your fish attractor, just try to see what you're swimming in and what you're around," said Curtis. Even with the low water level, the rangers are expecting a big crowd for Memorial Day. "A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work," said Hawkins. Click here for the current water level.
