The world's 1st large-scale solar powered desalination plant is being built in Al Khafji, Saudi Arabia by Advanced Water Technology (AWT). Due for completion in 2017, the plant will produce 60k m3/ day of water, enough to supply a city of 150,000 people. Through an energy offset, producing a surplus of energy during the day and drawing a lesser amount from the grid in the evening hours, it will be considered the first zero-carbon emissions desalination facility. The plant is considered a game-changer in sustainable desalination and helping to solve the world's water crisis.
