"During an epidemic, young researchers and higher education institutions can play an instrumental role to limit the impact of the crisis in their immediate communities - campus, locality, city. Kolkata's Jadavpur University sets an example with an interdisciplinary effort by scholars, to assist the support staff on campus who have been left without an income due to the lockdown. The Quarantined Student Youth Network began by setting up a commune with the institution to cook food, distribute ration, meals, masks and sanitisers, and provide lodging for canteen-runners, sanitation workers, tapri-runners (a shanty stall situated on the corner of the streets) and their families, who have not been able to return to their villages. Besides coordination efforts, students are conducting vital sociological research, tying up with research organisations, and has participated in the rehabilitation work after cyclone Amphan hit Kolkata and coastal West Bengal. This is one way in which one can foster social responsibility in higher education institutions."

About the podcast hosts:
Nikita Rakhyani (Program Officer, PRIA) is currently supporting various programs of PRIA that focus on building youth-leadership and capacities. She is a certified participatory trainer, with experience of conducting trainings and programs, with youth and adults. A post-graduate in Development Communication and Extension, Nikita has also conducted primary research with women in rural settings of India.

Jigme Garwang (India Coordinator, UNESCO Co-Chair in Community Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education; Research Assistant, PRIA), a post-graduate in Economics, is currently supporting PRIA’s initiatives that focus on Social Responsibility and Higher Education.
