Riverhead, NY, March 28, 2025 - The Riverhead Free Library was host to the "downstate" event as part of New York Sea Grant's (NYSG) 9th Annual New York Seafood Summit. Support for this event was also provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County.

The goal of this event, held on March 28th from 1-4 pm, was to convene enthusiastic professionals with vested interest in seafood (e.g., fishermen, aquaculturists, retailers, processors, chefs) to build active communications and build relationships among the various seafood producers and users in New York.

The primary audiences for this event were: Long Island culinary, seafood, seaweed, fisheries, and aquaculture professionals.

In the spotlight in this "downstate" Seafood Summit, which brought together seafood industry professionals and government officials:

• Fortifying the regional seafood sector

• Possible establishment of a seafood processing facility on Long Island

• Meeting the January 20, 2026 deadline for compliance with new FDA food safety regulations pertaining to food traceability (FSMA 204)

• Enhancing cooperation, bridging gaps, and overcoming industry hurdles

• Strengthening industry infrastructure and controlling costs

• Promoting sales and consumption of local seafood

The event included:

• Panel of industry experts
• Seafood tasting
• Resource fair
• Ample opportunities for networking and collaboration

Each year, we try to highlight some of New York’s bountiful seafood supply and introduce participants to the delicious, diverse, and versatile seafood available locally.

This year's summit, which included both in-person and virtual options, also includes events in Geneva (3/5) and Hyde Park (7/23).
