Playthrough with the 3 Sacred Treasures team. KoF 2003 is the final Neo Geo KoF game, and starts a storyline which would be continued in 2005's KoF XI. SNK decided to stop doing yearly KoF games after this one, after managing to do 10 in a row.

KoF 2003 makes major changes to the series, with the main feature being that you can swap characters during a fight, Marvel Vs. Capcom style. This makes the fights much more faster paced, as soon as one character is defeated the next comes on, with no break in the gameplay. You cannot constantly swap characters, you have to wait until it says ""change ok"" next to the super bars to be able to swap. Unlike a lot of other fighting games of this style, character who aren't currently fighting do no regain health when they aren't being used.

The C&D button knockdown attacks were removed, and a new "multi-shift" attack as added. Multi-shift allows you to start a combo with one character, then swap out with another to continue the combo. Another new feature is leader attacks. When you pick your team, you have to pick your team leader first. Every character has one exclusive super move when they're the team leader, which costs two super bar gauges to use.

For the first time in KoF, characters from Garou: Mark of the Wolves were made playable, with Tizoc and Gato joining the roster. Terry now wears his MotW outfit, and many other characters were altered to be given new outfits, most notably Robert and Benimaru.

This game also features alternate final bosses. After defeating 3 CPU teams you'll face Kusanagi, and deepening on how you finish him off effects which final boss you'll face. If you finish him with a normal or special move, you'll fight Adelheid. If you finish him with a super move, you'll fight Chizuru and Maki, then fight the true final boss, Mukai. To see your team's ending sequence, you have to defeat Mukai. I've done another playthrough of this game on my other channel showing the Adelheid fight:

The last two KoF games had awful bosses, the boss fights in this one are slightly better. The Chizuru & Maki fight is more confusing than anything, Maki in particular leaps around all over the place and it gets overwhelming trying to follow what's even going on. They aren't too bad overall though. Mukai is closer to the usual SNK boss syndrome we're used to at this point, although he tends not to block much and is considerably easier to deal with than either Igniz or Rugal. Too bad SNK would get it so wrong yet again in the next game.

Chizuru is not available be default, you have to input a difficult cheat code at the character select screen to unlock her. Kusanagi can also be played as via a cheat code, but as far as I know none of the other bosses can be played as without hacking the game.

For some reason this game does not have the usual Neo Geo startup sequence all other games in the series use. They stopped using it for the last few Neo Geo games.
