When restoring a truck’s engine, it’s always challenging to ensure the pulleys are precisely aligned. Later, when the engine is finally fully assembled and running, it would be easy to hear a squealing or creaking sound that alerts you to a pulley misalignment. But during the restoration engine work, it’s not so obvious. This quick video shows you how to make any necessary adjustments early in the rebuilding process and avoid the headache of taking everything apart again later.

Here’s how to align engine pulleys and bring your classic truck engine into perfect alignment. Start with a rope that’s thick enough to fill the V-groove without being too thick. It should seat fully into the V-groove with no rubbing or pulling.

Make sure the rope is fully wrapped around the V-groove and is firmly in place, then move it around the components where the belt would normally sit. As you do so, check for proper alignment and look for areas where the rope doesn’t move smoothly. Finally, make any adjustments that are required to bring the pulley system into full alignment.

Rick Drewry uses the reliable mock-up method because a rope replaces the belt temporarily and gives an immediate view of whether the alignment is spot-on. Later on, if your belt ends up being even slightly misaligned, it could harm your truck’s engine, prematurely wear out your components, and reduce belt life by up to 75%.

So protect your engine and preserve your sanity! Mock it up first. A misalignment could be a costly and time-consuming problem at this point in your engine restoration. It’s worth your time to do this quick mock-up on your truck pulley system during the alignment phase to prevent potential issues as you move forward with further engine work.
