The Green Book: Traveling While Black in America | True Black History

Imagine planning a road trip where every stop—for gas, food, or a place to sleep—could be a life-threatening encounter. During the dark years of the Jim Crow era (1930s-1960s), this was the harsh reality for Black Americans hitting the open road. Their essential map of survival was The Negro Motorist Green Book.

Created in 1936 by Victor Hugo Green, a Black postal carrier from Harlem, this revolutionary guide listed hundreds of businesses across the United States that were Black-owned or confirmed as safe and welcoming. It transformed perilous journeys into possible ones.

Mapping Survival: The book helped Black travelers avoid thousands of "sundown towns"—where Black people were violently forbidden after dark—and segregated businesses.

Safety Over Convenience: It provided listings for everything from hotels and guest homes to mechanics and barbershops, creating a vital, hidden network of safe havens.

Empowering the Black Middle Class: It enabled the emerging Black middle class, including professionals and veterans, to travel with some measure of safety and dignity, fostering Black enterprise along the highways.

Hope for the Future: Publication ended in 1966, two years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed segregation in public accommodations, fulfilling Victor Green's dream that one day, the book would no longer be needed.
