Description: Many applications in biology require purified DNA, such as gene sequencing. In this video, members of the Chalasani lab show us how they use a type of silicon dioxide coated magnetic bead to purify DNA from a liquid sample originally containing proteins and other cellular material. DNA is bound to microscopic beads using strong salts, washed with ethyl alcohol, and purified into a pH buffered solution. This method uses a magnet stand to pull DNA stuck to magnetic beads away from surrounding material, which dramatically simplifies clean up steps and enhances yield.
