On the anniversary of the sinking of the USS Maine, ​Arlington National Cemetery Command Historian Dr. Stephen Carney explains the cemeterial response to the tragedy and how over a hundred of the battleship's crew members came to be buried at the cemetery.

After the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana, recovery efforts spanned several years and a monumental effort was undertaken to recover the remains of the crew who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Arlington National Cemetery contains more Spanish-American War monuments and graves than any other site in the continental United States. This include​s the USS Maine Memorial, which features the mast of the battleship as well as its bell. The remains of 165 of the USS Maine's crew are interred in Section 24 of the cemetery.
