Since 2010, Natural Information Society (NIS) has been grounded in Abrams’ interwoven multi-layered compositions. The group’s long-form environments have been described as ecstatic minimalism. NIS navigates forms that emphasize collective listening & simultaneous differences while building a space that is both meditative & propulsive. Lisa Alvarado’s hanging paintings create a visual analog to the music & recontextualize performance space.

About the Artists

Joshua Abrams is a composer, bassist, and improviser. His early formative musical experiences include performing in a chamber group conducted by Earle Brown, and busking on the streets of Philadelphia as an original member of The Roots. Since the mid-1990s, Abrams has been a key figure in Chicago's creative music communities and an international touring musician with artists across genres. In 2010, Abrams formed the project Natural Information Society (NIS), a group that creates long-form psychedelic environments that join the hypnotic qualities of the guimbri, a Gnawan lute, to a wide range of contemporary musics and methodologies including jazz, minimalism, and experimental rock. https://joshuaabramsmusic.com/

Lisa Alvarado (born 1982) is an American visual artist and harmonium player. Alvarado is known for her free-hanging abstract paintings. Her works operate as stage sets and artworks simultaneously, and engage with abstraction beyond the parameters of western art history. Alvarado's paintings accompany musical performances as mobile setting for the band Natural Information Society, for which she plays harmonium (from Wikipedia). https://lisaalvarado.biz/

Mikel Patrick Avery is the drummer with Natural Information Society as well as a multi-instrumentalist, and home-made electronics maker in Philadelphia, PA. https://www.mikelpatrickavery.com/

William Parker is a bassist, improviser, composer, writer, and educator from New York City, heralded by The Village Voice as, “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.”  In addition to recording over 150 albums, he has published six books and taught and mentored hundreds of young musicians and artists. http://www.williamparker.net/

Hamid Drake (born August 3, 1955) is an American jazz drummer widely regarded as one of the best percussionists in jazz and improvised music. Incorporating Afro-Cuban, Indian, and African percussion instruments and influence, in addition to using the standard trap set, Drake has collaborated extensively with top free jazz improvisers. He studied drums extensively, including eastern and Caribbean styles. He frequently plays without sticks, using his hands to develop subtle commanding undertones. His tabla playing is notable for his subtlety and flair. Drake's questing nature and his interest in Caribbean percussion led to a deep involvement with reggae. https://bandcamp.com/tag/hamid-drake
