Fun Things to do on Embarkation

So what DO people do when they set foot on the ship? #1 - Roam the entire ship. Getting the lay of the land can be a great way to kick of your first day onboard. While you’re at it, strike a pose, and snap some killer photos. Your day 1 cruise vacation happiness is sure to shine through in the photos.
#2- Hit the ship's pools. This may be my favorite tip, because it’s kind of a secret. I’m not sure why, but most people don’t think to take a dip right when they board. Maybe that’s because the lure of lunch after a long day of travel, or a stop at the bar seems more appealing. But we swear by it.
#3- So, maybe you’ve been up since 3am, and just flew across the country, and the only thing you’ve eaten all day is airplane coffee and a bag of pretzels. The cruise ship's buffet is the obvious bet, but savvy cruisers will tell you to explore your options before you assume you have to do the obvious. Some cruise lines open their specialty restaurants, main dining rooms, and burger joints on day 1, so do some research at cruiseline.com before you sail and find out what your food options are.
#4- Feeling practical? Probably not, you’re going for the cocktail. But, Die hard cruisers, and slightly OCD cruise nerds like me, usually check their cruise newsletter to find out what time to visit the dining room to confirm their table assignment. Now, if you don’t care too much where you’ve been assigned to dine, skip this step, and head straight for the next tip. But, if you’re anxious about getting that table for two, your cruise ship’s maitre’d or head waiter will likely set up shop early afternoon in one of the dining rooms to field questions, and do their best to make you happy with your table assignment.
#5- Speaking of cruise nerds, some people like to get to their room, unpack, and shimmy those suitcases under the bed. Some of us even disinfect their rooms a bit.
#6- Some cruisers love to find a bar, and order their favorite guilty pleasure right after setting foot on the ship.
#7- What could be more traditional than the cruise ship's sailaway party on the pool deck? Pretty much every mass market cruise line holds a rockin sailaway party after the muster drill with music, dancing, drink specials, and the cruise director and entertainment staff on hand to amp up the fun.
#8- Prefer something a little more chill? We do too. Our sailaway tradition takes place on our very own balcony. We like to crack open our camera lens, and the bottle of red we packed in our suitcase, and watch the shore fade into the distance while we play our carefully selected playlist on our portable speaker.
#9- As the horizon fades away, and just before you pop your phone in airplane mode, post your last selfie on social media before those wifi rates kick in.
We asked our instragram and facebook friends how they spend their cruise vacation sailaway and most of them prefer a combination of things we mentioned. Some of them weren’t ashamed to say a nap usually sneaks in on that first afternoon. They also had loads of clever ideas we’d never thought of.
