Most people know that e-mails and facebook messages from unknown senders can contain dangerous links. More than 50 percent of people will click on an unknown link out of curiosity in a trend that could be exposing millions to hackers.A new study by researchers at Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) in Germany simulated a phishing scam that sent 1,700 messages to participants via email and Facebook. Worryingly, around half of the people clicked on the link despite being unfamiliar with the sender—even participants who claimed to be aware of the danger. “The overall results surprised us as 78 percent of participants stated in the questionnaire that they were aware of the risks of unknown links,” said Zinaida Benenson, who headed the FAU study.Many companies around the world saw an increase in email phishing attacks since March 2020. The threat of phishing is very real, and businesses feel the fear every time they get an email in their inbox. In 2020, 84% of organizations witnessed at least one phishing or ransomware attack.A few nasty tricks, viruses, and malware could be lurking behind risky links. All it takes to fall for a cyber scheme is to click on a link. For example, a malicious link could bring you to a fake login page. This is a way for a phisher to steal your username, password, or answers to your security questions. Instead of logging into your bank account or an online shopping account, you’re actually handing your login credentials right to a scammer. From there, they could walk into your accounts, make purchases in your name, or steal your sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) attached to your account.
