So today we hear the beautiful story of the transfiguration. Now if you read the early church fathers, they will say that this story is so closely paralleled to the story of our Mass. Notice how it begins. Jesus and his apostles climb a mountain. Whenever you hear mountains in the bible whether it's the Old Testament or the New Testament, it's always synonymous where you are will encounter God. So, Jesus climbs the mountain and heaven and earth unite in the most powerful way and the glory of heaven shines upon Jesus and transfigures him. And the apostles see that he truly is the son of God. But more importantly the apostles catch a glimpse of the goal. The goal for us all which is heaven. Take us, every time we come to Mass, we climb that mountain ourselves. Because every time we come to Mass, we know that we will be in the presence of God. And so, it is at the time of the consecration that heaven and earth unite in the most powerful way. And we look upon that altar and we see Jesus' body and Jesus' blood. We are in the presence of the son of God. More importantly we recognize, just like the apostles we have caught a glimpse of the goal. The Panis Angelicus. The bread of the angels. Now the story continues. The apostles see, moses and Elijah talking to Jesus. Recognize they represent the law and the prophets. But isn't that exactly what we hear when we come to Mass? We read from the law and the prophets. Now take it to an even deeper level. Moses and Elijah have been dead hundreds and hundreds of years before Jesus was even born and yet now, they're alive and they're talking to Jesus. They represent the communion of saints. We have to recognize when we come to Mass we're not alone. Instead, the saints and the angels, they're right here, right now. Because they're doing the same thing we are. Offering God right praise and right worship. In fact, if you look throughout the prayers of our Mass, we recognize their presence. I'll give you an example. At the end of the preface, we say may our voices blend with all the saints and the angels as we acclaim, and then we launch into the holy, holy, holy. Next in the story the holy trinity reveals itself to the apostles. At Mass we recognize that we too are in the presence of the holy trinity. If you listen through all the prayers during the Mass we are always praying to the father, through the son in union with the holy spirit. One last thing. Peter, he wants to stay on that mountain. He doesn't want to leave. But Jesus says no. And they make their way down the mountain and they head on their journey. That journey leads to Jerusalem. Jesus knows it's in Jerusalem that's where his destiny lies. Not staying on top of that mountain. When we conclude our Mass, we're not meant to stay here in this church. That's why the priest says go now to love and serve the Lord. Just like Jesus we have to come down that mountain and we have to go out into this world and live out our mission which is to be faithful disciples of him. And we can because just like the apostles we have caught a glimpse of the goal. Jesus' body and blood. And that inspires and motivates us to continue to live faithful lives.
