This presentation will cover patient blood management which includes the risks and benefits of blood transfusions, why transfusions are often overused, and how to minimize unnecessary transfusions along with their risks and costs. Methods of reducing or avoiding transfusions while maintaining excellent clinical outcomes are reviewed and described in detail. Outcomes at transfusion extremes (massive transfusions and patients who don’t accept transfusions) will also be reviewed.
After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to:
1. At the end of the lecture, the attendee will be able to describe the recommended indications for blood transfusion according to the latest randomized trials and published society guidelines.
2. At the end of the lecture, the attendee will be able to identify the best methods for collection, analysis, and presentation of blood utilization data, in order to improve practice.
3. At the end of the lecture, the attendee will be able to name five methods of blood conservation that will result in a reduction in blood use, enhanced patient safety, and cost reduction.
