My first Four Job Fiesta (http://fourjobfiesta.com/) run, and this was actually my first time ever beating Shinryu (I never bother in a normal FFV game).

My jobs are Thief, Mystic Knight, Beastmaster, Dancer. I wound up with a #No750 team unintentionally. Not using rods, though, really made me strategize more deeply than I think I would have otherwise. I abhor level-grinding in this game, so I attempted Shinryu with my team below level 40 (three at 39, 1 at 38). !Catch really opens up a myriad of strategies for these sorts of fights.

The strategy here is not terribly elegant, but it clearly worked! I caught a Mammon in the Dimensional Castle, which casts Bersk (Berserk) on one ally. I prepped the Magic Lamp to set of Carbuncle's Ruby Light spell, so that Berserk would bounce on to Shinryu (replicating a typical !Mix or Power Staff strategy of Berserk'ing the boss). The Running Shoes allow Lenna and Faris to out-speed Shinryu's Tidal Wave attack, negating the need for Coral Rings.

In earlier attempts, I tried using a Nile's Flash skill in hopes of blinding the guy, but Shinryu's Magic Defense is simply too high for it ever work. In lieu of blinding him, I made Bartz and Cara into evasion-tanks, outfitting them both with Guardians and Elf Capes (and Bartz with a Genji Shield, which clearly helped quite a bit). While they tank and revive folks with Phoenix Downs, Lenna and Faris roll the dice on !Dance. Each Sword Dance (50% chance for Lenna; 25% chance for Faris) criticals with the Dragon Whip for 9999. Enough good dice rolls, and some luck with the evasion-tanks, and Shinryu fell. It was quite an exciting battle!
