On October 17, 2024, the Department of Energy’s Office of Science hosted the first of a four-part lecture series featuring the 2024 Distinguished Scientist Fellow Dr. Kirstin Persson of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The Distinguished Scientist Fellows Award honors senior DOE National Laboratory scientists with outstanding records of scientific achievement and provides Fellows with $1 million in direct funding to support activities that develop, sustain, and promote scientific and academic excellence in DOE Office of Science research.

Dr. Kristin Persson of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was honored for pioneering advancements in data-driven materials design and discovery through first-principles based computations and analysis algorithms that yield materials with optimal properties for engineers and scientists worldwide to accelerate innovation, and for her management and outreach skills that promote DOE’s missions. The award was presented by the Office of Science Associate Deputy Director for Science Programs Dr. Linda Horton, and Office of Science Acting Associate Director for Basic Energy Sciences Dr. Andy Schwartz.
