Further Ramblings of Railwaymen - Eric Christian - Tunbridge Wells West & Hither Green MPDs

I first met Eric Christian when I joined the Southside Training School as an Acting Instructor in 1987.
He would normally be involved in any type of new rolling stock or locomotive that would require driver training mostly on the technical side of how the equipment on them functioned.

When the 2-Car 456 Unit was introduced, Eric, Ralph Sullivan, David Timothy and myself took the unit out from Selhurst Depot and tested its performance.

I retired from the Training School in 1994 and apart from meeting up at a South Side Instructor Re-union in 2010 we didn’t meet up again until another S’Side Instructor Christmas reunion last year where I asked Eric if he’d like to write down some of his early experiences of working on the steam.
Here are some of Eric’s tales…..
