This sermon clip is from The Chosen Christmas special, “Holy Night,” and is being used in worship on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at First United Presbyterian Church of Dale City, VA (used with permission).

In this scene, we witness not only the social rejection shepherds endured, but the even deeper spiritual rejection they faced. When a limping shepherd approaches a religious leader in the marketplace, hoping his lamb might be accepted as a temple sacrifice, he is met with contempt—and even told that “it’s because of people like you that the Messiah has not come.”

Though imagined for the screen, the moment reflects the real stigma and exclusion shepherds lived under in the ancient world. It powerfully prepares us to hear the shock and wonder of the angels’ message in Luke 2: that peace—God’s peace—is announced first to those deemed unworthy.

This clip is used in our Advent sermon series, “Holy Night: Nothing Is Impossible with God,” highlighting how Jesus brings:
• peace to the rejected,
• dignity to the wounded,
• and reconciliation between God and those who thought they stood far outside His favor.

In Advent, we remember that the Messiah came not to the powerful or polished, but to the forgotten and the hurting—then and now.
