Jonathan’s grandpa, a Michigan Tech mechanical engineering graduate, inspired him to come to Tech. Grandpa kept up with Michigan Tech through the years and Jonathan listened to his stories. “He mentioned the Career Fair a lot,” Jonathan says. “A lot of companies are always looking for students.”

Jonathan, who majors in civil engineering, landed an internship at Career Fair during his second year at Tech. He did geotechnical testing — and he even got to work on the Soo Locks, “which was cool ‘cause that’s what my grandpa did.”

Getting into the actual boots-on-the-ground engineering has been huge for Jonathan, who is captain of the university's Steel Bridge Team. He says that once you hit your third year your studies start to get more enjoyable because you can specialize in what you want to do — general math courses like Calc 3 and Diffy Q are behind you. “It really starts to open up,” he says.

Jonathan plans to go into geostructural work, designing foundations, looking at considerations like soil-bearing capacity, and collaborating with structural engineers to design buildings. Where will your Michigan Tech degree take you? See what we have to offer and set up a campus visit.
