The world is spending about $6 trillion a year in an attempt to help the most disadvantaged people around the globe. The bad news: It’s not going very well. The good news: We could probably accomplish a lot more ... while spending a lot less.

One of the underappreciated success stories of the 21st century is the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), an effort to improve the lives of the world’s most disadvantaged people through a series of discrete, targeted actions on the planet’s biggest issues.

When the MDGs came to an end in 2015, the U.N. decided to launch a follow-on effort to continue the progress. Only this time, the plan looked a little … different.

Whereas the MDGs limited themselves to a handful of discrete, achievable goals, the new plan was sprawling and immodest in its ambitions. And, partially as a result … it’s not working very well.

These failures inspired a team of social scientists to ask what kind of change we could create if we reverted to the MDGs’ tough-minded focus. And on issues from childhood immunization to global agriculture, one thing became clear: We could accomplish a lot more while spending a lot less money.
