Their first stop, Cheno’s Cafe in Castara Village, for a hearty Caribbean-inspired breakfast. Fresh fruits and vegetables, saltfish, eggs and bacon was served with coconut bake, and a hot cup of chocolate tea. Of course, they had to stop by Glasgow’s Bar overlooking Parlatuvier Bay to catch a glimpse of the iconic postcard view.
The journey continued to the remote village of Anse Fourmi/L’anse Fourmi, where they met husband and wife team, Judy and Earl, of E&J Dirt Oven. Here, they specialize in all sorts of baked goodies; from coconut bake to hops, wheat and pumpkin bread. They even offer pone and coconut drops to satisfy your sweet tooth.
On the way through the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere, Rhett and Kervin stopped by Shurland’s Nature Park to feed some hummingbirds. Unfortunately, it was mating season so not many of them were out that day.
After the rainforest adventure, they arrived in the village of Roxborough, where Dawson and his wife operate M&D’s, a local restaurant serving up a mix of Trinbagonian and Jamaican cuisine. On the menu that day was barbecue and jerk chicken, beetroot rice, callaloo, macaroni pie, green fig salad and curry goat.
The last leg of the road trip took them along the Southeastern coast of the island where they stopped for fresh sugarcane juice infused with ginger before visiting Fort Granby in Mount St. George. Then, they met up with Simone, Sophie and Caroline of Pumpkin’s Delights at the Store Bay Beach Facility. Here, they learnt the emotional story behind this family business before sampling the popular curry sugarcake treat. Among their many sweets were bene ball/sticks, tulum, nut cake, paw paw ball, red mango, plums, fudge, and many flavors of sugar cake.
Before closing off the day to a wonderful beach sunset, Rhett and Bop checked in with Tobago Ebikes, located in Buccoo Village, where they met up with their tour guide Chris. They got their bicycles ready and took a scenic ride to Black Rock village, taking in Grange, Mount Irvine and Stonehaven beaches along the way.
The grand finale for the island tour was a surprise to the crew as they stumbled upon Herbz Genesis, a roadside souse vendor selling all the favorites; chicken foot, cow heel, cow skin, pig foot, shrimp souse and more.
