Located near the hillside in Hulu Kelang, Selangor about 15 km from city centre of Kuala Lumpur, the location was formerly surrounded by lush jungle and rubber trees.
The zoo faced numerous challenges throughout the history and the challenges were started even before the opening of the zoo in 1963.
