Sight words, high frequency words, heart words, they are what kindergarten and first grade teachers spend A LOT of time on in the classroom. Make learning fun with songs, chants and cheers and make them up on your own.

We are going to step through the process of making your own classroom songs, chants and cheers to make learning sight words fun, fast and efficient.

Once your students learn the song, chant or cheer that you create they can engage in spontaneous practice of the words, writing activities, and so much more.

The process is simple.

First, pick a word. Make it a word that your students need help with.

Second, play around with the word by trying to find a rhythm or rhyme that the word has when you say it and spell it. Get creative. Use tunes and rhythms that you already know. If you can, make the song chant or cheer into a simple sentence. This is helpful when developing extension activities that go with your song, chant or cheer.

Third, put actions to the song, chant or cheer. Getting kids up and moving will make the learning more fun and may even accelerate learning for some of your students.

That’s it.

Now just practice the song chant or cheer in your classroom. Do you have 30 seconds before recess? Practice. Do you want a mini brain/body break? Practice. Want an educational attention getter? Use a sight word song, chant or cheer.
