This movie is a total mess, but it is a fascinating one. In this clip, I break down my final verdict on HBO's 1991 cult oddity, Cast a Deadly Spell. While it doesn't quite reach the heights of other Lovecraftian classics like In the Mouth of Madness or Re-Animator, and lacks the cohesion of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it swings for the fences in a way you just don't see anymore.

The biggest issue? The tone. One minute it's slapstick comedy with gremlins, the next it's a gritty noir detective mystery, and then suddenly it’s pure cosmic horror. It can never quite pick a lane. However, the ambition is undeniable. The world-building—treating magic as a mundane utility like electricity—is top-tier genius. And Fred Ward? He is absolute perfection as H. Phillip Lovecraft, the only guy in L.A. who refuses to use magic.

I gave it a "Gentleman's 2.5 out of 5 Stars." It's a time capsule of the "Wild West" era of cable TV that I am genuinely glad I discovered. It’s worth watching once just to say you did... but you definitely need to prepare yourself for that ending.
