Bilingual Education (English-Filipino) as Medium of Instruction in Teaching Mathematics

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to know the effectiveness of using bilingual education (English-Filipino) as a medium of instruction in teaching mathematics.
Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a quasi-experimental design.
Findings: Findings showed that there is no significant difference in the level of understanding mathematical concepts between the students who were exposed to English as the medium of instruction in one lesson and Bilingual Education (English-Filipino) in another lesson. However, the registered mean for the summative test using Bilingual education (English-Filipino) was proficient which implied that there was a positive result in using Bilingual Education (English-Filipino).
Research limitations/implications: The study focused on the 40 pupils of Grade 5-Mabini of Bulihan Elementary School who got a low MPS during the First Quarter Examination in Mathematics School Year 2019-2020.
Originality/value: The use of bilingual education in teaching Mathematics was found to be valuable in improving students’mathematical conceptual understanding, problem-solving performance, and interest in mathematics than using English only as a medium of instruction in teaching.
