Treatment which enhances immune cells invasion into tumours is a promising idea to improve cancer treatments, with new research looking at its use in breast cancer.
The antiparasitic medicine, ivermectin, has been previously found to enhance immune cell invasion in other types of tumours but has not yet been tested on breast tumours. Enhancing immune cell invasion into breast tumours has the potential to increase the effectiveness of current immunotherapies which rely on the presence of immune cells to work.
Breast cancer has just surpassed lung cancer as being the most commonly diagnosed cancer throughout the world. While current breast cancer treatments show some success, breast cancer diagnoses and deaths are still on the rise, creating the need for new and improved therapies.
Finding that ivermectin does improve immune cell invasion into breast tumours will pave the way for new and exciting research on its benefit to current immunotherapies. This will potentially lead to a new breast cancer treatment that may change the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the world.
