European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday described the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement as the “mother of all deals,” signalling that negotiations could conclude soon.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, von der Leyen framed the prospective pact as part of Europe’s broader global trade strategy, emphasising “fair trade over tariffs, partnership over isolation, and sustainability over exploitation.”

The India-EU trade deal, long under negotiation, is expected to significantly deepen economic ties between Brussels and New Delhi, covering sectors ranging from manufacturing and technology to green energy and supply chains.

If finalised, the agreement would mark one of the EU’s most ambitious trade partnerships, reinforcing India’s growing role as a key economic and strategic partner for Europe amid shifting global trade dynamics.
