Text: John 20:24-31 Jesus Appears to Thomas
24 Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Introduction:
In this passage, Jesus showed Himself to everyone that He is alive. But Thomas disbelieved Him. He doubted Him but after a while he believed again to the Lord Jesus. This scenario is a constant scenario in our churches.
Theme: Reality of Christian Church: The Doubters and the Believers
Question: What are the two realities in our Christian churches?
I. There are doubting Thomases (v.24-25).
Thomas as our model:
The absentee, and the doubter – v.24-25.
He did not believe Jesus’ words in Matt. 20:17-19.
II. There are pushing believers like Jesus (v.26-27).
Jesus as our model:
He gave proofs (v.26-27).
He gave a command (v.27).
III. There are doubters who simply need encouragements (v.28).
Doubters doubt momentarily; eventually believed God again (v. 28).
Jesus showed the more blessed one; the believing believers (v.29).
Summary:
The doubts among Christians are a constant scenario among Churches and circles.
In fact, despite the great knowledge they have in mind like Thomas about Jesus, still the Thomases in the church are a reality.
Propositions:
I. For visitors, you must first believe Jesus yourself.
Entering that arena needs yourself to acknowledge that you’re a sinner and you need a Savior.
John 1:12- Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God
II. Be one of the churches’ faith pushers.
Faith is the most important virtues in our life.
Faith means everlasting life.
v.30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
The challenge: We need to constantly give reminders, exhortations, and preaching day after day. Because to believe is very important. To believe is tantamount to life everlasting.
III. Double our power and unity because of the multiple tasks we have in Jesus.
A. Strengthen the doubting brethren.
Romans 14:1 -2
Romans 15:1
I Cor. 8:9 -12
B. Snatch people who are in fire.
Jude 1:23
