A black family and a Jewish immigrant that have come from Latvia. And it 3 stories and how they intertwine. With the backdrop of real life characters who existed in that era, in that period."

5. SOT Maria (actress): "Each different group are forced to make decisions that take an enormous amounts of courage and instinct to achieve and it lows their lives apart. And then it is a matter of finding common ground and a place where they somehow come together. And they do find a way, not all of them. And all of the characters aren't make up musical characters, they are fallible human beings who find life difficult but who find some wonderful dignity and spirit and courage. Which for is what is the most beautiful thing about the human race."

SOT Sonya Friedman (producer): "It is by no means a jingoistic piece, it is actually a very moving, but quite hard hitting at times and quite brutal story about society and how , and about tolerance and acceptance. And it is a very important story to be telling now actually because depressingly life has not changed a hundred years later."

US MUSICAL COMES TO WEST END

The London premiere of the Tony Award-winning musical, 'Ragtime', takes place tonight (19/03/03) at the Piccadilly Theatre.

The original production of the show opened on Broadway in January 1998 where it ran for two years. During this time is was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won 4.

The brand new production, freshly conceived and designed for its London audience, features an orchestra of 20 and cast of 38, including British musical stars Maria Friedman, Dave Willetts and Graham Bickley.

It is the story of three different fictional families whose lives become intertwined at the turn of the 20th century. It is a story about the choices we face and how we become the people we are, set against the backdrop of real life characters who existed in that era.

The play will be running for a limited 8 week season, performances play 7:30 PM Monday-Saturday, 2:30 PM Wednesday and Saturday.
