What is Unabated Fossil Fuel | COP 28 | Indepth | Drishti IAS English

At this year’s COP climate summit, one phrase that took the centerstage was “unabated” fossil fuels. For instance, in a new deal agreed at the meeting on Wednesday (December 13), countries recognized the need to accelerate “efforts towards the phase-down of unabated coal power “. Notably, the phrase is inextricably tied to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies — a hotly debated subject between oil and gas producers, and climate experts. So, what does “unabated” mean in climate negotiations? What is its connection to carbon capture? Why is CCS controversial? We take a look. When it comes to fossil fuels, “unabated” means doing nothing to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases that are released from the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas. Conversely, “abated” refers to the attempts to decrease the release of polluting substances to an acceptable level.
