IS-2: More Armor than a Tiger and almost as light as a Panther

The Soviet Heavy Tank IS-2, has a stronger frontal armor than a Tiger, a bigger gun than the King Tiger and at the same time was just 1 metric ton heavier than a Panther. So how was this possible?
