Almost a day ago, along with the recent happenings that are occurring right now especially in the United States after the death of George Floyd, someone has sent a complaint to Faber regarding some of the songs in their method books and it received various opinions from teachers.

"Publishers of Faber Piano Adventures,

There are several songs in the Piano Adventure books that are racially offensive, inappropriate, and should be removed from all future publications. Songs such as “Camptown Races”, “Oh Susanna” and “Jingle Bells” (Adult Piano Adventures, Accelerated Piano Adventures for Older Beginners) originated in Blackface minstrels. It is irresponsible for publishing companies to continue to profit off Blackface songs, and deeply disrespectful to Black students and teachers who use these books. I will no longer be using these songs in my teaching.

Songs found in various Piano Adventures books are blatant examples of tokenism. “Chinese Dragons”, “Gypsy Camp”, “African Celebration” are but a few examples. It is ignorant to name a song after an entire continent that has such a diversity of Indigenous musical traditions. It is clearly inappropriate to name a piece “Generic European Celebration”, as it is also inappropriate to name a piece “African Celebration”. How would a non-Black music teacher explain that piece to their multiculturally diverse students? Instead of generically naming any song “Chinese ____” for teaching pentatonic scales, perhaps it is more appropriate to choose an actual traditional folk melody from China that uses pentatonic scales with some historical context. There are countless examples across genres from around the world that use pentatonic scales, and yet without fail the pentatonic scale is used to represent a vague sense of “Chinese-ness”. Music education is already widely Eurocentric, with many systems and institutions viewing white European music as superior and elite. Seeing these titles and songs in beginner learning books further exacerbates this problem and perpetuates stereotypes.

With Faber books published and distributed worldwide, too many students, parents and teachers of diverse backgrounds are exposed to the current racially offensive content. Publishers need to do their research, and look through all its publications, omit offensive songs, and change song titles of tokenism songs. While the teacher does play a role in giving context to the material, you have a responsibility to refrain from publishing culturally inappropriate and racist music in educational books. By continuing to publish these materials despite their racist and loaded histories, Faber is upholding Eurocentric values, centring whiteness, and failing a diverse multicultural community of music learners and educators. I hope to see a change in the future publications.
