STORYLINE

As U.S. forces launched their long-awaited war against Iraqi president Saddam Hussein on Thursday, about one-thousand American troops swept into southern Afghanistan in a new military operation to flush out al-Qaida terrorists and their allies.

As Operation Iraqi Freedom began in the Persian Gulf on Thursday morning, American troops in Afghanistan were preparing for Operation Valiant Strike.

Around a thousand soldiers were ferried by helicopter into the mountainous region around the former Taliban stronghold.

Acting on intelligence reports, soldiers scoured the rough terrain and raided villages, hunting for al-Qaida terrorists and members of the ousted Taliban regime.

It's one of the biggest military operations here in over a year and is expected to continue for several days.

The raids came minutes after U.S. forces launched their first strike against Iraq, but military commanders in Afghanistan say that was purely coincidental.

It's the latest in a series of operations carried out recently by a multinational, U.S.-led coalition based at Bagram air base.

A signal to al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants that war with Iraq doesn't mean any respite for them.
