Gambia is defined by the river that runs through it. Everyone lives within reach of the water and all aspects of life depend on it. But population growth, overfishing, and environmental degradation have threatened both nature and livelihoods across the ecosystem. Now, the Gambian government, UNEP, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) are working together to protect The Gambia’s ecosystems and improve lives through sustainable conservation practices.

From mangrove restoration and anti-poaching patrols to community agreements, this project demonstrates how local action can drive global biodiversity goals.
