Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a significant concern in zoological collections, affecting the health and welfare of various animal species. A recent study conducted in a Scottish zoo examined the prevalence and diversity of GIN infections among co-grazing animals, including horses, sheep, alpacas, deer, and tapirs. Researchers collected fresh fecal samples from these animals and analyzed them using a saturated saline centrifugal flotation technique to detect and quantify nematode eggs. Deep-amplicon sequencing was employed to identify the specific nematode species present. The study revealed a 95% prevalence of GIN infections across the sampled animals. Notably, goats exhibited the highest egg counts, averaging 460 eggs per gram (epg), while other species had counts below 200 epg. Among the various gastrointestinal parasite species identified, the presence of the potentially pathogenic Haemonchus contortus was particularly concerning. These findings underscore the importance of regular monitoring and tailored management strategies to control GIN infections in zoological settings, ensuring the health of diverse animal species cohabiting within these environments.
