Have you ever heard a recording of yourself and thought - am I really that nasal sounding? It’s a common issue! I’m Camille, singer & teacher with 30 day singer, and I’m sharing my top 3 tips for reducing nasal tone quality in your singing.

Tip 1: Lower the back of your tongue

Try this with me: say the word sing, and sustain the end. Great, now say sing-uh. You probably felt the back of your tongue lower down, away from the roof of your mouth. You can move back and forth between an NG sound and an UH sound to get used to that motion.

When we make an NG sound, that’s truly a nasal sound. But you’ll notice, even when your tongue is just high in the mouth, you produce a more nasal sound.

Singers sometimes raise the back of their tongue without realizing it. If you suspect you might be doing that, remove the lyrics of whatever song you’re singing, and sing on the syllable GUH. When you return to lyrics, remain mindful of your tongue position!

Tip 2: Increase the space within your mouth

Compare the difference in tone. But I’m not just dropping my jaw. I’m also creating more space inside my mouth.

Stay with me, because this is important! I can have a nasal sound, drop my jaw, and still sound nasal. To reduce that nasality, I first need to create space internally, and the easiest way to do that is to gasp as if you’re surprised. Feel more space in the back of your mouth, and you may even feel your throat open a bit. Then sing, with that space!

Tip 3: Use the vowels UH and OO (as in BOOK)

Two of my favorite warmup syllables are WUH as in WHAT and BOO as in BOOK. Both the UH and OO vowel are what some might call “dark” vowels. They naturally have a rich tone quality, and the way they’re produced makes it less likely that you’ll sound nasal. Try these syllables, or others containing the vowels UH and OO, in your warmup or song work! For example, you may replace an open AH in a warmup with WUH.
