Every Canadian stock that surpassed the Royal Bank of Canada in market cap has fallen—very hard and very fast. Some examples include Nortel, BlackBerry, Valeant, and, most recently, Shopify.

The Royal Bank of Canada was incorporated in 1869. The value of its enterprise (and stock price accordingly) has been a slow yet steady grower.

During the dotcom bubble, Nortel Networks massively surpassed the value of RBC, but quickly came crashing down.

In 2007, BlackBerry became more valuable than RBC, but then got its lunch eaten by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android.

Then in 2015, Valeant Pharmaceuticals became larger than RBC but it later became engulfed in controversy for its fraudulent accounting practices. It’s now called Bausch Health.

Most recently, Shopify’s stock price shot up during the pandemic, but tough growth comps and a slowing economy have pushed this e-commerce darling down 60% from its top.

Lesson learned: don’t mess with RBC.
