Bobby Hamilton and Dale Earnhardt traded the lead back and forth late in the 1996 GM Goodwrench Service 400 at Rockingham. On lap 345, with Hamilton leading, Earnhardt and Hamilton made contact, sending Hamilton up the racetrack. Hamilton hit the wall with his right rear fender and tire, and it caused quite a bit of damage. It ended up breaking a suspension part that took him out of contention. He would spin out later in the race and then crashed at the checkered flag. Through all of that, he finished 24th.

ESPN briefly went over the incident at the beginning of the Pontiac Excitement 400 the next week. There was still some disagreement between Hamilton and Earnhardt about the incident, but it was best to move on.
