Protecting Polylepis forests in South America

Описание к видео Protecting Polylepis forests in South America

In March of this year some of our team embarked on a trip to Peru, to visit our reforestation partners, Global Forest Generation, and their restoration initiative - Acción Andina 🌱

Acción Andina is an initiative being delivered across the Andes in South America by local partners to conserve and restore native Polylepis forests. It was co-founded by Global Forest Generation and Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos - ECOAN, and the initiative was an Earthshot Prize Winner in 2023 and was also announced as a United Nations World Restoration Flagship earlier this year.

In this video Constantino Aucca Chutas and Florent Kaiser, the co-leads of Acción Andina, explain why water security is the number one priority for the Andes region. The Polylepis forests that are being restored as part of this initiative are vital for protecting access to water for millions of people, as they absorb vapour rising from below, and help to slow the movement of glacial meltwater, to gradually redistribute water into rivers and streams throughout the year.

It was a brilliant site visit which meant so much to our team. You can read more about the Acción Andina initiative on our website 👉 https://ecologi.com/projects/restorin...
