Ein zentrales Element der Ausstellung „The Museum of Broadcasting and Loneliness“ ist der neue Film „Saturn and Beyond“, der im Salzburger Kunstverein erstmals gezeigt wird. Der Film (2020) ist eine einstündige Reflektion über die Entwicklung der transatlantischen Kommunikation und verbindet schließlich diese Netzwerke mit neuronalen Netzwerken und dem Thema Demenz. Er zeigt die Entdeckung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Blitzen und Elektrizität, wie sich diese Erkenntnis zunächst in elektrischer Kommunikation niederschlug und dann zu transkontinentaler Kommunikation und schließlich zum Rundfunk führte.
Saturn and Beyond beschreibt ebenso, wie die Entwicklung der Telekommunikation und der Luftfahrt schließlich zur Erforschung des Sonnensystems führte und zum Wunsch der Menschheit, Signale bis in die entferntesten Tiefen des bekannten Universums zu senden. Am spezifischsten betrachtet der Film unsere Beziehung zum Planeten Saturn, dem fernsten Planeten des Sonnensystems, der für das menschliche Auge noch sichtbar ist.
Schließlich betrachtet der Film den Verfall des menschlichen Gehirns und die exponentielle Ausbreitung der Alzheimer’schen Krankheit und Demenzen in jüngerer Zeit. Mit der Verlängerung der menschlichen Lebenserwartung steigen auch die Krankheitszahlen bei Alzheimer und Demenz, und ein Bericht der Weltgesundheitsorganisation aus dem Jahre 2019 berichtete von zehn Million neuen Demenzerkrankungen pro Jahr. Ironischerweise ist die Krankheit in Westeuropa und Nordamerika am weitesten verbreitet – den zwei Kontinenten, die als erste durch telegrafische Kommunikation verbunden waren.

Central to the exhibition “The Museum of Broadcasting and Loneliness,” is the new film, “Saturn and Beyond,” with the world premiere at the Salzburger Kunstverein. Produced in 2020, the film is a 60 minute reflection on the development of transatlantic communication, ultimately connecting these networks with neural networks, and dementia. The film traces the discovery of the connection between lightening and electricity, and how this understanding developed into firstly electrical communication, and expanded to transcontinental communication and ultimately broadcasting.
“Saturn and Beyond” considers how the development of telecommunications and air travel led ultimately to the exploration of the solar system, and, humankind’s desire to send signals to the further regions of the known universe. Most specifically it looks at our relationship with the planet Saturn, the furthest planet in the solar system visible to the human eye.

Lastly, the film considers the decline of the human mind and the recent exponential growth of Alzheimer’s disease and dementias. As humans begin to live longer, cases of Alzheimer’s and dementia are increasing, and a 2019 report published by the World Health Organisation stated that there are ten million new cases of dementia each year.

Ironically, the disease is most common in Western Europe and North America – the two continents first connected by telegraphic communications.
